Colds and flu are on the rise in the U.S., with an average of 4% of Americans over 18 reporting being sick with the flu on any given day in December 2014. Climb under the covers, rest, and take care of your symptoms to feel better in no time.
Symptom Smarts
According to Dr. Keri Peterson, Contributor to Women's Health Magazine, the best thing you can do to recover quickly is stay home and rest. But no matter what, remember that there is no cure for colds and flu. "But, you can treat your symptoms," she says. That said, Dr. Peterson advises, "there are some great options out there for treating a multitude of symptoms. I like Vicks Dayquil and Nyquil Severe with maximum strength medications like acetaminophen for fever and aches, dextromethorphan for cough and phenylephrine for congestion."
To boot, keep your environment humid, as dry winter air can be irritating to the nasal passages. Consider Vicks' new Cool Mist Humidifier--which Dr. Peterson recommends because it releases just the right amount of mist into the air, relieving cold and flu symptoms.
Be Prepared
If the worst happens, prepare to push though it. "Wash your hands often, carry hand sanitizer, and carry tissues like Puffs Plus Lotion. They soothe irritated skin and they lock in moisture better than regular tissues," says Peterson.
