There’s nothing that freshens up a glass of water like a slice of lemon, but did you know that adding it to your drink could have several health benefits? In honor of National Lemon Juice Day, here are some of the amazing things the beverage may do for your body when you drink it daily.
Hydration helper
Every day you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh. This may seem like an overwhelming amount of water, but incorporating lemon water into your daily diet can make downing those glasses a part of your routine. For extra flavor, you can add mint, ginger, maple syrup. Or add honey for a potential health boost.
Boost your vitamin C intake
The juice of one lemon provides about 18.6 milligrams of vitamin C. The benefits of vitamin C may aid in protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.
Improve digestion
Drinking warm or hot lemon water when you wake up may help get your digestive system moving. The acid in lemon juice can also help break down food more efficiently and loosen toxins in the GI tract.
Breathe fresher
Lemon works as an antiseptic to kill bacteria in the mouth that causes bad breath. Although acid in lemon can eliminate odor, it can also wear away tooth enamel so wait a few hours before brushing your teeth after drinking it.
Weight loss aid
Lemon juice has almost no calories–fewer than 10 calories per glass. This makes it the perfect beverage to refresh and feel full. The pectin fiber in the lemon may also slightly suppress hunger and cravings. Drinking more water throughout the day can help to improve metabolism by up to 30%.
Prevent kidney stones
The citric acid in lemons may help prevent kidney stones by breaking up the smaller ones. Since lemon water is a diuretic, it can also help flush out stones.
How to drink lemon water
To make the elixir, squeeze half an organic lemon into 8 ounces of warm or cold water. To get the full benefits, drink it first thing in the morning and/or with a meal every day.
Since lemon is very acidic, it's not recommended to drink more than 4-6 tablespoons throughout the day. To avoid damage to the enamel of your teeth, drink the juice through a straw.
