September 23 is the official first day of autumn. Ease your way into the season with these festive ideas.
Decorate
Host a decorative harvest of hay bales, pumpkins, corn stalks, and the official plant of fall, mums. Bring elements of the outdoors in. Fill a bowl or vase with pinecones, pumpkins, or apples. You can also use them as centerpieces.
Seasonal Brew
Switch up your usual morning brew for a pumpkin flavor, or add a sprinkle of cinnamon or even a drop of vanilla extract to your cup. Spice up an evening cup with a shot of rum or Irish cream.
Fall for Confections
Make an autumn treat like gooey cinnamon rolls, caramel apples, or pumpkin bread.
Outdoor Escape
Go apple or pumpkin picking. Some farms and orchards include other activities, like hayrides, mazes, and farm animal visits. Or go on a grape escape day or weekend wine-tasting tour.
Crank Up the Slow Cooker
Gather friends and family for a big batch of slow-cooked chili or stew using fall ingredients and herbs such as potatoes, carrots, leeks, squash, rosemary, tarragon, and thyme.
