Promising Young Woman is not your average tale of a woman’s revenge. The film written and directed by Emerald Fennell and starring Carey Mulligan, Laverne Cox, Adam Brody and Alison Brie goes deeper to address the issue of consent and sexual assault on women.
“I think this film is a direct response to this cultural moment we are having,” said Cox, “I feel a sense of justice at the end of this film and I think so many of us just need that...because so often there is no justice.”
The film offers a unique look from the perspective of the perpetrators as well. “All the guys in the movie are so great. I think that’s part of the point,” said Brie, “When we think about consent, I think we often want to think of monsters and villains perpetrating acts on women but more often than not it’s really friendly looking people you wouldn’t expect that behavior from.”
The star, Mulligan, said it was the sense of sisterhood that struck her about the film, “It feels like this real strength of community between women and we do look out for each other even more so now.”
See the movie in theaters starting Christmas day.
