Electronic music legend Moby kicked off the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival with the opening night screening of his new documentary PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE on Friday night. The project is the directorial debut of the musician and is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. We were there to ask the artist firsthand about making the film, including conducting interviews with some of the biggest names in punk history, including Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Steve Ignorant, and Captain Sensible.
“I wanted to make this movie…because a few years ago, I was talking to some friends in the animal rights movement, and I mentioned that so much of the modern animal rights movement comes from the world of punk rock,” Moby told us. “No one knew anything. And these were people with tattoos. These were people who listened to punk rock music." Moby said he assumed it was common knowledge that punk rock and animal rights were so intertwined since he grew up with it. It was surprising to a lot of people, he said.
In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. Check out slamdance.com for more information.
