Actor, singer, songwriter...the well-rounded Asher Monroe does it all. And with the release of his new two-part EP On My Way, featuring "Here With You," "Hush Hush," "Lonely Island," and "Memory" featuring Chris Brown, Monroe is sharing all the details about how he's come this far -- and where he's headed next.
"On My Way is the EP, and I just feel like it was a good title to kind of just tell a story that I'm on my way, on my journey," says Monroe, "This is a body of work I've done over two years, and so with Chris Brown and his whole team...this is an older body of work that is now coming to life, that I'm really excited to be putting out."
Monroe -- who's written and collaborated with major entertainers such as Ryan Tedder and Sean Kingston, as well as Brown, to help shape his sound -- says the opportunity to work with these industry influencers has been an education. "It was an awesome experience just to go in the studio...with Chris," he shares, "I didn't get to see very much of the personal side; I just got to see really his professional side and what he's like in the studio. It's good energy. It's like, he's so professional and he really actually took me under his wing, and I learned a lot from him."
As for how his journey here began, Monroe says, "It's hard to wrap it up in a couple sentences, but I was living in Virginia at the time. My next door neighbor came home one day; she had heard on the radio [there was] an Open Call audition for the national Broadway tour of Beauty and the Beast. I begged my mom over and over; she was so resistant at first, didn't know what I was getting myself into. There were kids there in tuxedos; I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm so out of my league.' And the day of, they actually, they offered me the part for Chip."
From there followed roles in the touring productions of Oliver and The Sound of Music, among others, and even a stint as the lead singer of Johnny Wright's boy band V Factory and a lead role in the 2009 remake of the movie Fame.
"But for me, the music has always been my passion," says Monroe, "And after this EP, I'm hopefully putting out a full-length album this year. And I feel like once that next body of work is done, I then can start making plans to get on the road...I'm really excited for the fans to see the growth that's happened in the last few years and just to see where I'm at."
Being accessible to his fans is a priority for Monroe. "I think the best way for my fans to get in touch with me is, they can follow me on Twitter: Asher Monroe [and on] my web site AsherMonroe.com," he tells us, "So I encourage my fans to reach out...because there's a lot more music coming this year." And if his journey so far is any indication, we'll be seeing plenty more of Asher Monroe in the years that follow.
