With a haunting music style and a slew of songs featured on some of the hottest shows on TV, Los Angeles-based Caught a Ghost has been conjuring up a following. We sat down with the phantom finders Jesse Nolan, Tessa Thompson, and Steven Edelstein at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City to talk about their soulful sound and upcoming album drop.

So what's the meaning behind the trio's eerie name? "'Caught a ghost' is an expression that musicians used to use when you were possessed by the spirit of the music," says Nolan, the band's frontman and songwriter.

And without putting a label on themselves, Nolan, who plays all of the instruments on his recordings except horns and some drums, says their music "has kind of an old timey vintage quality to it, but also has elements of music that I grew up listening to, like '90s rap and hip hop."

Caught a Ghost, initially a studio project that originated in Nolan's basement, is now signed to +1 Records and released the EP "Nightworks" last February.

Nolan and drummer Edelstein have known each other since they were five years old while vocalist Thompson, the sole lady bandmate whose acting credits include Veronica Mars and Copper, joined the boys later. "She was a "natural fit," says Nolan, "She has a beautiful voice."

The trio's first album Human Nature is slated for release early next year, and the upcoming record's unique sound may be due to the different influences each bandmate brings. "I think we all have really varied personalities, and we bring that to the music and certainly to the live show," says Thompson.

Television has certainly taken note of the group whose songs "Time Go" and "No Sugar in My Coffee" have been featured on shows such as Grey's Anatomy, Suits, Vampire Diaries and Boardwalk Empire.

"It's great to get out and see people face to face who have maybe heard the song on TV or wherever they're finding the music on the Internet," says Nolan.

The band is seeing even more fan faces on their current tour. "The tour's been an amazing time. It's our first national tour and it's been amazing," says Nolan.

Even if the audience isn't familiar with the music, by the end of the show it's a different story. Nolan explains, "Usually if they don't know who we are, what I've experienced is, you see them kind of interested, you know, arms crossed at the first song, and by the end, they're into it."
