Crystal Fighters aren't your typical band. Reigning from the UK, Spain and the U.S., Sebastian Pringle, Gilbert Vierich, and Graham Dickson's latest album Cave Rave, captures Basque culture with the unique traditional instruments, the txalapartas and txistus. The guys discuss their records' inspiration and embarking on an American tour with Portugal. The Man.
Graham Dickson and Gilbert Vierich met through a mutual friend in 2007 in Scotland, and even though they only knew each other for a few days, Vierich knowing Dickson made music convinced him to move to London to meet Sebastian Pringle. From there, Crystal Fighter's was formed.
"Our inspiration really came from the Basque country," admits Dickson, guitar and txalaparta "Our friend Laura from Scotland, her grandfather passed away and left her a book."
Besides using Laura's grandfather's writings for musical inspiration, the band's name also originated from there.
"Crystal Fighters...he kind of summed it up by these group of renegade kids called Crystal Fighters and that is sort of how we like to live," says Pringle, lead vocals, guitar.
The bandmates admit for their first album they were "obsessed" with the Basque culture but for Cave Rave they mixed it up.
"We kind of took a step back and we're like what was before all of this, trying to make sense of the universe around us," says Pringle.
Despite the name of their new album, where else do they like to jam? "We love to play live. You know we started playing in clubs nonstop and we still love it," says Dickson.
Crystal Fighters will be playing "every show like it's our last" all around America with Portugal. The Man.
