Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison

Frightened Rabbit released Pedestrian Verse, their fourth album, with tracks like Act of Man, State Hospital and Backyard Skulls offering a departure from the norm, as the band's founder Scott Hutchison explains.

"I think this album looks at slightly more at a wider section of society...so those three songs in particular are more in storytelling than me writing about personal experience like I've done in the past," says Hutchison.

Hutchison, who usually draws on personal experiences to conjure up lyrics, found himself looking outward for inspiration this time around.

"It's strange to be in album four, I feel like something completely new is happening. I guess I'm trying to challenge myself lyrically and get that comfort going, which is writing about my flaws and fables and things that have gone wrong," says Hutchison.

And the songwriter has not just used his music to express himself, but also as a way to grow from the band's name.

"The name Frightened Rabbit came from a nickname I was given when I was younger because I was very socially awkward. And I would get taken to parties and I would sit in a corner with a terrified look on my face because I was terrified," says Hutchison.

Evidently, it was not a case of stage fright for this Rabbit, who started off performing solo under the name in 2003. The band added about one new member per year, and as they slowly grew, they developed an ambiguous sound that not even Hutchison can pinpoint.

"I don't know exactly where we sit in genre. I don't think we do anything particularly experimental. I think it's rock music essentially starts with the roots of it, perhaps starts with folk music, but that is very a strong tradition in Scotland and... that sort of permeates through music," says Hutchison.

No matter the style, Hutchison believes the band is making music for the right reasons. And their honest music (along with some fun) is what the band intends to share with fans on this tour.

Hutchison explains, "The tour is ongoing, never-ending, it's really long, and I think that is the way it should be. Fans can expect half old, half new, and tons of sweat... I feel the band should be the people in the room having the most fun, otherwise what's the point?"
