"Sometimes doing something wrong is really good. That's what we were trying to explain in the song," says The Ting Tings' Jules De Martino of his favorite track "Do It Again" on their newly released album "Super Critical". "We recorded "Super Critical" in Ibiza, which is a small island off the coast of Spain. We've kind of realized that every time we make an album, we seem to move to a new country. We think it has something to do with feeling like a new band. We can get 20% of that feeling. It helps with songwriting. In our previous album, we over-analyzed things and tried to perfection it. So in a way, Ibiza really loosened us up," says singer Katie White.
While they may have been creating "Super Critical" in their euro-chic hideout, De Martino and White were inspired by some classic American groove. "Ironically, we got inspired heavily by Studio 54 and CBGBs--all this American late 70s, early 80s disco funk soul thing," adds De Martino.
And when it came time to bring their third album to life stateside, the tour didn't disappoint. "There's nothing better than touring the USA. Nothing," says Jules. "Katie had seamstresses turning up in every town to make all these crazy clothes. She would literally post on Facebook as we're coming in on our bus, asking if there is a seamstress in town. She would pay them and give them a free night at the show. They would literally sit in our dressing room with us," revealed De Martino. Guess that explains White's eclectic and electric style on stage and off.
As for getting used to fame and the thrill of the tour, The Ting Tings don't take anything for granted. "We know all our friends are trying to make it. You just have to get used to that's the way it is. And you know what? It doesn't change--even when you're successful and travel around the world. It's just like that all the time. It never ends," says De Martino.
