When singer-songwriter and guitarist Mitchy Collins teamed up with vocalist Danielle Bouchard in May 2013 to form the folk-pop duo Oh Honey, they didn't imagine they'd be crossing items off their music career bucket lists quite so quickly. And as their latest whirlwind tour winds down, they stopped by to tell us all about it...and about their latest EP, of course.
"Our new EP is called Sincerely Yours, the second installment of four. This EP...it's a bit darker than the first one. Life kind of played into it a little bit more," says Collins, adding, "Danielle and I had met, you know, a handful of years before, to actually play music together."
Bouchard explains, "I kind of sang something a cappella into my phone and sent it over, not really sure what was going on or what would come of it, but I was very happy when it all worked out, so..." Adds Collins, "You know, she was the missing link and now we're here."
And "here" is Brooklyn, where the band is based...and where it often finds its inspiration. "We've both lived in New York for a long time and you go through a lot of things very intensely," explains Bouchard, "That all plays into the songs we write."
But one song in particular paved the way for the pair's meteoric rise, as Collins explains, "'Be Okay,' you know, made all our dreams come true."
The effusively optimistic song, featured on Glee, put Oh Honey on the map, in the spotlight...and just about everywhere else. "I was in the car with my dad and it came on Sirius and he started to tear up. It was a really special moment," shares Bouchard.
She goes on, "I think, too, some of the venues we've gotten to play on tour over the last year have been incredible. We toured with The Fray this summer, and we got to play a sold-out Red Rocks in Denver to 10,000 people, and it was just unbelievable, you know. Just one of those other Bucket List dream things that you don't think is going to actually happen, and then it does, and it's amazing."
"You know, we keep a high energy," adds Bouchard, "We just have fun with each other on stage, you know. We've all been playing together now for, touring pretty steadily, for the last year or so... We love to be on stage every night and we have fun with it."
And Oh Honey invites you to have some fun with them. "Come see us at a show. Buy a record," laughs Collins. Bouchard adds, "The tour's wrapping up but, we have a couple shows left so, yeah, come see us."
