Former Vice President Dick Cheney dead at 84
The former Vice President, who served under the George W. Bush administration, passed away at the age of 84 due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Cheney’s political career spanned more than four decades and left an indelible mark on American government and foreign policy. He rose to prominence as White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford, later serving as U.S. Representative for Wyoming, and as Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush, where he oversaw the U.S.-led coalition victory in the Gulf War. In 2001, he became Vice President of the United States, playing a central role in shaping national security policy following the September 11 attacks, and in steering the nation into the Iraq War—a decision that would define much of his legacy. Despite enduring years of serious health challenges, including multiple heart attacks and a heart transplant in 2012, Cheney remained an influential and outspoken figure in conservative politics long after leaving office. In a statement, his family remembered him as “a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.” They expressed deep gratitude for his lifelong dedication to public service and his enduring love for his family.
Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd, mother of Laura Dern, dies at 89
The award-winning actress passed away yesterday in Ojai, California, with her daughter Laura Dern by her side. While the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, Ladd had previously been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a serious lung disease, in 2018. A three-time Academy Award nominee, Ladd enjoyed a celebrated career spanning more than six decades across film, television, and theater. Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, Grateful Dead singer, dies at 78
The celebrated vocalist, best known for her work with the Grateful Dead, died at the age of 78. She passed away on Sunday at a hospice facility in Nashville, Tennessee, following a prolonged battle with cancer. Godchaux-MacKay was a member of the Grateful Dead from 1972 to 1979. She also performed with the Jerry Garcia Band and the short-lived Heart of Gold Band, often alongside her first husband, keyboardist Keith Godchaux. Her career bridged the worlds of classic soul and R&B with the psychedelic rock movement of the 1970s. Her distinctive voice added a rich, textured layer to the Grateful Dead’s sound during one of their most formative eras, while her earlier work as a session singer placed her on some of music’s most iconic tracks.
