Chip Taylor, “Wild Thing” songwriter and Angelina Jolie’s uncle passes at 86
Legendary songwriter and performer Chip Taylor—born James Wesley Voight—has passed away at the age of 86. He died Monday in hospice care at a hospital in New York City. While an official cause of death has not been formally confirmed, multiple reports indicate he had been battling cancer, following treatment for throat cancer in 2023. Taylor leaves behind an extraordinary musical legacy, penning timeless classics such as “Wild Thing,” famously recorded by The Troggs, and “Angel of the Morning,” a hit for both Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton. His songwriting credits also include “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)” for Janis Joplin and “I Can’t Let Go” for The Hollies. In recognition of his enduring influence, Taylor was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016 and later earned a Grammy nomination for his 2009 album Yonkers, NY. He was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and uncle to actress Angelina Jolie. Following his passing, Jon Voight shared a heartfelt tribute, saying, “I’m doing fine. My brother was a great fella. He’s watching over me now, so I’m protected.”
