Kimi Antonelli wins Japanese Grand Prix, becomes youngest F1 standings leader at 19
Italian driver Kimi Antonelli made history with a victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula 1 World Championship at just 19 years old. Starting from pole position, Antonelli dropped to sixth on the opening lap but recovered with an impressive drive through the field. A well-timed pit stop during a Safety Car period—triggered by Oliver Bearman’s crash—proved decisive in helping him reclaim the lead. Antonelli crossed the line 13.7 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finishing third. The win marks his second consecutive victory following his triumph in China. The 2026 Formula 1 season now heads into a short break before resuming at the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
