Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell passes away at 64
Phil Campbell, the longtime guitarist for legendary rock band Motörhead, has died at the age of 64. His family announced that he passed away peacefully on Friday after a “long and courageous battle in intensive care” following a complex operation. Campbell spent more than three decades with Motörhead, joining the band in 1984 alongside Michael 'Würzel' Burston after the departure of Brian Robertson. He remained a key member for 31 years until the band officially disbanded in 2015 following the death of founder Lemmy Kilmister. After Motörhead’s final chapter, Campbell launched a new group, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, performing alongside his three sons—Todd (guitar), Tyla (bass), and Dane (drums). The band also featured vocalist Neil Starr, who was later replaced by Joel Peters. In 2019, Campbell released his first and only solo studio album, Old Lions Still Roar, which featured an impressive lineup of guest performers including Alice Cooper, Rob Halford, and Dee Snider. At the time of his death in March 2026, Campbell was reportedly working on new music with Julian Jenkins, lead singer of the hard rock band Fury. He had also recently performed a sold-out hometown show at the Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd, Wales. Campbell is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gaynor, their three sons, and several grandchildren.
