Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost first American-born pope is chosen and will be known as Pope Leo XIV
After the second day of the conclave white smoke emerged from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, signaling the cardinal electors of the Catholic Church had chosen a new pope. About an hour later, it was revealed that the new pope was Chicago-born as Robert Francis Prevost. The 69-year-old is the first American pope, but he is also a citizen of Peru, where he worked for many years. This morning the new pope now entitled Pope Leo XIV returned to the Sistine Chapel to deliver a mass for the College of Cardinals. “You have called me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission, and I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church, as a community, as friends of Jesus, as believers, to announce the good news, to announce the Gospel,” he encouraged on his first day in the anointed position.
