Summertime travel is in full swing, but like many Americans, as prices continue to rise, you’re probably looking for ways to be savvy with your spending. According to data from the U.S. Labor Department in June, year over year, we have seen the cost of consumer goods and services increase by 8.6%, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, making it the largest 12-month increase since December 1981. Here are some ways to save on summer travel this season.
For starters, consider being flexible with your travel dates. When you’re more flexible, you can often find dips in travel prices. Look for low-season destinations or scope out cool, fun places close to home that you haven’t considered before.
Another great way to save is checking if your credit card has special offers or benefits that can help you earn cash back on travel. Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex, for example, recently launched their latest quarterly bonus offers. Between July 1st through September 30, you can earn 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent on things like car rentals and gas stations, perfect if you’re thinking about a road trip.
Live entertainment and movie theater purchases also get 5% cash back through the end of September, so you can finally see that hot movie premiere or your favorite artist on tour you have wanted to see without worrying about your wallet.
If you’re not a Chase Freedom cardmember, consider applying. Chase Freedom recently extended their new cardmember gas offer, which includes a $200 sign-up bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening, plus 5% cashback for each $1 spent on gas station purchases made within the first year of opening an account or until you reach $6,000 in gas station purchases, whichever happens first.
As if it couldn’t get better, Freedom + Flex cardmembers can also earn 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases, so you’re always earning on summer travel and beyond.
